Tour to the Attractions of Soroca – Moldova

Soroca is one of Moldova’s most historic and culturally rich towns, located on the banks of the Dniester River near the Ukrainian border. A tour of Soroca offers visitors a fascinating journey through medieval history, local traditions, and scenic landscapes.

The main highlight is the impressive Soroca Fortress, a well-preserved 15th-century stone castle built by Stephen the Great. Its round towers and thick walls tell the story of Moldova’s defensive past and provide stunning views of the river. Nearby, visitors can explore the famous “Candle of Gratitude,” a tall monument symbolizing respect for Moldovan culture and history, reached by a scenic hilltop walk.

Soroca is also known as the “Roma capital” of Moldova, featuring unique Roma palaces with ornate architecture and vibrant designs. These colorful buildings reflect the local Roma community’s heritage and traditions.

The town’s riverside promenade offers a peaceful place to relax, enjoy nature, and experience daily Moldovan life. With its mix of history, culture, and beautiful scenery, a tour to Soroca provides an authentic and memorable experience for travelers exploring northern Moldova.

Program:

Route: Chisinau - Soroca Fortress - Candle of Gratitude - Soroca Museum of History & Ethnography

We start our trip at Soroca Fortress, this gloriously solid behemoth on the Dniestr dates from 1499 when Moldavian Prince Ştefan cel Mare built a wooden fortress here. It was rebuilt in stone less than 50 years later and given its circular shape, with five bastions.

Today, those bastions contain medieval-themed exhibits, with a few English placards posted about that shed light on the history of the fortress. From the eastern bastions, you can watch a Soviet-era river ferry shuttle cars to Ukraine, two at a time. The fortress hosts a festival every August.

You can get fantastic views of the Dniestr and the perfectly partitioned fields of Ukraine beyond this curious obelisk, Candle of Gratitude, which was erected in 2004 to honour the 'anonymous heroes' responsible for preserving Moldova's culture over the years. It's accessible by a 660-step (not an exact count) stairway on the town's southern outskirts.

The last stop will be at the Soroca Museum of History & Ethnography.
