The Triumphal Arch

Chisinau, Moldova

The Triumphal Arch is a very famous monument situated right in the centre of the capital, on the National Square and opposite the Government House. It was built in 1840 by the architect Luca Zauschevici and thanks to the governor's of Besarabia initiative to commemorate the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish war. At the second level there is a huge bell of nearly 6400 kg „Clopote-velican” that was initialy made for the Cathedral's belfry but happened to be too big for it. The monument and the mechanism of the clock were fully restored in 1973.
